The Course Syllabus

FACULTY

Professor Mel Rosenberg was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1951. He grew up in Ottawa and immigrated to Israel in 1969. He received his Bachelor of Science from Hebrew University (1973) and went on to pursue both his Masters of Science (1975) and Ph.D. (1982) at Tel Aviv University.

He currently manages the Keter Center for Innovation in Engineering and Design at Shenkar College, where he also serves as advisor to the President of the College on student affairs. Mel currently lectures on creative thinking and personal entrepreneurship at Shenkar College and has published numerous online resources dealing with creativity, sortytelling, oral presentations and other skills.

Rosenberg’s interest in the diagnosis and treatment of bad breath (halitosis) led to the development
of two-phase mouthwashes, now popular in the UK (under the name Dentyl pH) and more recently,
the US (manufactured by Colgate). He is also the inventor or co-inventor of several other patents,
including two microbial inoculation tools, the Quadloop and the Diaslide, an upside-down spray for

FAQ

Why does this trip cost $250? I thought Birthright was free!
For the “Birthright Israel Study Abroad” trips only, the $250 (taken from your original deposit) is the remainder after a Birthright subsidy over and above the normal 10 day trip. The additional funds are for the academic accreditation, the lecturers, and the field study days with the university faculty. It also helps cover part of the additional two trip days. A similar 3-credit summer course in Israel’s leading universities usually costs between $1,500 – $2,000. Participants who are able to transfer the credits would save the tuition fees or time studying a 3 credit course at their home institution which could be much more expensive.

Can I go on this trip without paying the $250?

Not at this time. For the “Birthright Israel Study Abroad” trips only, in order to cover the fees of the partner academic institution and the issuance of college-level academic credits, Birthright needs to transfer $250 per person to Tel Aviv University. Once you accept a spot on this trip, you confirm that we can transfer those funds from your $250 Birthright deposit.

Is this trip strictly academic, or are there aspects of a regular Birthright trip in it?

On your Innovation & Entrepreneurship themed Birthright Israel Study Abroad trip with Mayanot, you’ll experience plenty of Birthright Israel adventures such as incredible hikes, immersing yourself in Israeli culture, experiencing one of a kind cities, connecting with your Judaism and much more! Additionally, your coursework is integrated into your itinerary. The specialty themed part of the program is comprised of roughly 1/3 lectures from professionals in the field, 1/3 workshops, such as creativity & ideation and team-building and 1/3 visits to tech companies, VCs and local start-ups.

What are some of the unique aspects/sites and activities the Birthright Israel Study Abroad group gets to do that are different from the other national Birthright trips?

From visiting international tech giants, to meeting leading VC executives, to visiting an IDF army base, to interacting with some of Israel’s leading entrepreneurs, the itinerary for this trip is designed in a way that the field is your classroom. Come back soon to see a detailed, tentative itinerary to get a better picture. At the end of the trip, Tel Aviv University will grant participants who complete the program 3 credits, transferable to their respective schools. The group is also joined by Israeli soldiers for five days!

I’ve already been on a Birthright Israel trip. Can I go on this one?

This trip is considered a full fledged Birthright trip. If you have gone on a trip before, you are not eligible to go on this particular trip.

How will my credits transfer over to my school?

It is the participant’s’ responsibility to follow up with their home university and see how they want the transfer credits to be sent.

Are there tests/exams we have to take to pass the course?

There are no tests during this course, but you will have to write a final paper (7-10 pages long) on a topic of your choice, to be approved by your professor. This paper will be due about three weeks after your trip is over.
